In fact, when did you last delete any accounts?
A few days ago, Google announced Passkeys. A giant step towards a passwordless society. No more passwords, means no more hitting the forgotten password button on a rarely used website, no more typing the same thing again and again and reducing easy access to your accounts.
It will use your devices log in. If you use Face ID it will use that. Fingerprint, that’s your access.
Considering approximately 111.7 million Americans are hacked each year (https://cutt.ly/n6wY1He) and this is just the US remember, it’s probably something we all need to take more care over.
However, something else that we should think about is, how often is that website used? How many accounts do we all have set up around the internet that we no longer use?
I’ve been meaning to do a password refresh for months now, but this passkeys announcement made me dive in to my password managers. Personally I use Google’s password manager and Keychain. (I need to sync these as well while I think about) but while looking through the password manager, I realised I have so many accounts that I no longer access. They’re dormant accounts that I no longer need. But, rather than just delete them from here, I’ve decided, and you should too, that I’m going to each website, and decide how much I need it. If I rarely access it, I’ll be closing/deleting the account before removing those passwords.
It reduces the chances of being hacked, and also makes it easier to manage on a more regular scale. I may even make it an annual process along with future digital minimalism.
How many dormant accounts do you have plastered all over the internet? And how many times have you used that same password? It could be worth taking a look.
